Tiger paw size compared to domestic cat paw and male human hand

Image
This is a triple comparison focusing on the paw size of a regular domestic cat. The adult tiger paw is genuinely enormous. Its size emphasises the size of the tiger. The Siberian tiger species is the world's biggest cat. I have a feeling that the paw we see in the photo is that of a Siberian tiger. Picture comparing domestic cat paw size with tiger paw size and human hand (male). Image: MikeB The strength of the tiger is very apparent in this photograph. Physically tigers are very powerful. They are burly animals supremely well equipped to single-handedly capture and subdue very large prey animals. Their strength is legendary being able to drag large prey animals across rough ground and even uphill over considerable distances to cache the animal before consuming it. The skull is large and foreshortened. This increases the bite force at the tips of the amazing set of canine teeth. The neck is short and the shoulders are broad. The forelimbs are massive, ideal for grappling with pre...

How do tigers produce their roar?

Image
Tigers are able to produce their distinctive roar with the help of a specialized larynx and vocal cords. Their larynx, also known as the voice box, is larger and more complex than that of other big cats, such as lions and leopards. Tiger roar by DALL-E. The roar is produced when the tiger exhales forcefully, causing air to pass over the vocal cords, which vibrate and produce the sound. The sound is amplified by the tiger's large chest cavity, and can be heard from up to 2 miles (3 kilometers) away. Click this for some more detail on the tiger roar . Tigers can also produce other vocalizations, such as growls, snarls, and moans, to communicate with other tigers or signal aggression, warning, or mating readiness. Dissections of the larynges of various cat species in studies have shown that the structure of the vocal folds in the genus Panthera are well-suited for producing a high acoustical energy, allowing these big cats to produce their characteristic roar. The efficient sound radi...

Do tigers climb trees?

Image
It is hard to imagine tigers not being able or not wanting to climb trees. They are a cat, and all cats are great or at least adequate climbers as most enjoy moving vertically and a few species of wild cat are arboreal (live mainly in trees).  Although, admittedly, the Siberian tiger is a very hefty animal and less agile compared to smaller wild cat species. That said, the picture shows four Siberian (Amur) tigers climbing trees in order to reach a treat put there by Whipsnade Zoo staff to make their lives more interesting. The photograph is by the zoo. The treat was for breakfast, apparently. Amur tigers climbing trees at Whipsnade Zoo, UK. Photo: the zoo. So, we can tell in specific terms that tigers climb trees and in general terms the picture is slightly different but similar. The experts say that tigers "rarely climb trees, although they can and will, especially if provoked". In Chitwan National Park, Nep, a tigress was observed with a new-born young, and she was irritat...

Can tigers cry?

Image
Yes, tigers can cry because the verb "to cry" refers to crying for emotional reasons AND it also refers to crying for physical reasons such as washing an unwanted substance from the cornea of the eye or eyes. There must be instances in the life of a tiger when their eyes tear up to wash away an irritant. And those tears drain into a tear duct which in turn drains into their nose. They would not have a tear duct if they could not produce tears and if they can produce tears they can cry. Can tigers cry? Yes. Photo: Pixabay. People normally associate crying with an emotional response to something causing grief or sadness. Even elation. But the dictionary definition of crying is wider than that. The verb is applicable even without emotion. I think it's pretty clear that cats don't cry because of emotions but there is an ongoing debate about the types of emotions that cats can experience. There is a discussion on whether cats can experience higher emotions. We know tha...

When do tigers become adults?

Image
I can call upon Mel and Fiona Sunquist again to answer the question in the title (Wild Cats of the World). In relying on the work of JLD Smith and C McDougal (1991 - The Contribution of variance in lifetime reproduction to effective population size in tigers ), they state unequivocally that ' tigers continue to grow and put on muscle until they are about five years old ; this prolonged period of growth is more evident in males than in females '. When do tigers become adults. At about 5. Photo: Pixabay So tigers become adults at around five years old. This reminds me the often quoted statement that the Maine Coon domestic cats becomes a mature adult at aged four. They, too, are relatively slow developers. Male tigers become sexually mature at three to four years of age and they normally take longer than females to acquire breeding territories. At about three years old females become sexually mature. They conceive about six months later. A tigress might have her first litter w...

How many stripes do tigers have?

Image
In answering the question I took a common sense approach. Taking one side of a tiger and counting the stripes on one side of the face, the stripes on one leg, the stripes on the flank, the stripes on the hind legs and the tail (counting half of them) I came up with around 60 stripes which I had to double making a predicted 120 stripes on a tiger!! Amur tiger. Image by TheOtherKev from Pixabay   That is pretty crude I guess. Essentially, I counted the stripes on one side and doubled it. The problem is that the stripes are not nice and neat. They are irregular and broken. This obviously makes counting them imprecise. They are actually stretched out spots. It is a bit like the mackerel tabby domestic cats. Their stripes are joined up dots. But I don't think the person asking the question would mind. I counted the stripes on a Sumatran tiger. I would expect the same result on other species of tiger, plus or minus around 10-20 stripes. It can't be an accurate process. ...
